EZVM
Local virtual machines for Windows, without the Hyper-V setup maze.
Create and manage Hyper-V VMs from curated templates, with ISO checks, lifecycle guidance, console launch, checkpoints, and repair actions in one focused desktop app.
How EZVM works
EZVM replaces manual Hyper-V setup with a three-step flow backed by tested templates and clear VM lifecycle actions.
Choose from privacy, security, and Linux templates with sane Hyper-V defaults for memory, disk, CPU, generation, and Secure Boot.
Download directly when supported, import a bundled development asset, choose a local ISO, or verify an existing managed file.
Create the VM, start it, open the Hyper-V console, checkpoint it, and move installer VMs from ISO boot to disk boot when installation is complete.
Built around how Hyper-V actually works
Not a generic VM launcher. EZVM handles the boring configuration and the awkward maintenance steps that usually require Hyper-V Manager, PowerShell, or ISO juggling.
Plan-aware templates with category, vendor, license, mode, and asset readiness so you know what will launch before you create a VM.
Download, import, choose, verify, and remove managed ISO assets with size checks and configurable SHA-256 verification.
Start, stop, open console, checkpoint, and delete VMs from one list with current runtime state and lifecycle phase visible.
Use Boot Disk after install, then Boot Installer again for rescue or repair when needed.
Repair Display resets Hyper-V video settings for black-screen console cases and clears the display-compositing state.
Saved VMs show runtime state, lifecycle phase, specs, and recent operation history so recovery and audits are easier.

Local-first VM management
EZVM does not host VMs or replace Hyper-V. It manages local virtualization with the Windows-native stack, and it keeps your data local.
Creation, runtime, disks, and console access all use Windows-native Hyper-V through PowerShell tooling.
App state, VM inventory, and managed ISO assets remain under local paths such as %LOCALAPPDATA%\VM Deck and standard Hyper-V storage.
ISO assets can be checked by size and optional SHA-256 before they are used for new VMs.
EZVM does not redistribute Windows installation media or browse for unofficial copies of licensed OS installers.
Local logs expose enough detail to trace asset state, VM creation, and lifecycle failures during support.
The app is local-first. Telemetry should be opt-in if it is added later.
Plans
The app already exposes plan-aware behavior in the template catalog. These plans describe the current intent and roadmap expectations.
- Core Free templates
- Basic VM lifecycle actions
- ISO download, import, and verify
- Local inventory and activity
- Limited VM count in current build
- Expanded template access
- Custom ISO import
- Advanced snapshot workflows
- Planned for future release
- Encryption support when implemented
- Shared template libraries
- Education and lab workflows
- Admin controls
- Not in current build
- Setup flow will be defined later
FAQ
Does EZVM work on Windows 11 Home?
Not in the current release. This version uses Hyper-V PowerShell tools, so it requires Windows 11 Pro, Education, or Enterprise. Windows 11 Home support will require a different virtualization backend.
Are Windows ISOs included?
No. EZVM does not redistribute proprietary Windows installation media. Templates are aimed at Linux and privacy-oriented live/installer images, and custom ISO import will be added later.
What does Repair Display fix?
It resets host-side Hyper-V video settings for black-screen console cases. Use it when the Hyper-V console opens but shows an unusable display.
Where is app data saved?
Inventory and managed ISO assets are stored locally. The app uses %LOCALAPPDATA%\VM Deck for app data; VM disks follow Hyper-V storage paths on your machine.
Why do some VM actions need administrator privileges?
Hyper-V configuration operations use PowerShell and WMI, which require elevated privileges on Windows. EZVM should be launched from an admin context for create, delete, checkpoint, and repair workflows.
